About Time

About Time produces Australia’s only prison newspaper, a free monthly publication made with people who know prison from the inside. Tens of thousands of physical newspapers go directly into prisons each month. Every edition carries original reporting and investigations, health and legal information, letters, memoir, poetry, art and stories about life inside and after prison. Every day, readers write back.

The newspaper reaches people experiencing extreme isolation. Many spend up to 23 hours a day in a cell, with few sources of news and limited opportunities to speak for themselves. Across Australia, women’s imprisonment is increasing and First Nations women are disproportionately incarcerated. Many women in prison are mothers and victim-survivors of violence.

About Time began in Victoria and New South Wales and now reaches every prison across Australia. Our partnership will support this national growth and help About Time widen access in places of detention, run writing and journalism workshops, maintain correspondence with readers and develop audio and visual storytelling.
